About the Campaign
Support the recent G20 commitment to social protection that is child sensitive and AIDS inclusive
Support for social protection initiatives that address the vulnerability of children in the context of HIV and AIDS is central to a comprehensive and sustainable response to the impact of the epidemic to children. Worldwide there are an estimated 15 million children who have lost one or both parents to AIDS. These and other children affected by AIDS remain vulnerable within their families and communities and need support. In the area of care and protection for children affected by HIV, governments are increasingly investing in social protection systems that support families affected by HIV. These investments are threatened under the current economic crisis and need to be strengthened in this time of need.
What is UNICEF doing:
UNICEF works in the field supporting governments to create and implement social protection systems that support the most vulnerable. UNICEF promoted child sensitive social protection interventions that aim to improve comprehensive child-well being measured by health, survival, education, protection and development outcomes that include child protection and systems development. UNICEF in partnership with the interagency Task Team on Children and AIDS has developed a working paper on "Social Protection for vulnerable children in the context of HIV and AIDS: Moving towards a more integrated vision", to guide governments and other actors in the development of sustainable responses to vulnerable children.
