Previous Commitments

Action was pledged in five key areas: health systems strengthening; maternal, newborn and child health; infectious diseases - including AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, polio and neglected tropical diseases; promotion of a cross-sectoral approach - including the empowerment of women, reduction of gender inequalities and violence against women, and health; and resources.

Developing countries were encouraged to allocate more of their own resources to health care, and the G8 reiterated its commitment to working towards the goal of providing at least US$60 billion for combating major infectious diseases and strengthening health systems.
